What the firm is

Tao Capital is a private investment firm. It is not a fund manager and it does not raise money from outside investors. It invests its own capital, which gives it a freedom most institutional investors do not have: it answers to no redemption schedule, no fund term and no investment committee other than its own.

The firm operates two platforms. Its private equity platform takes control and growth positions in operating businesses, with particular depth in technology and healthcare and further activity in sports, real estate and consumer retail. Its secondary platform deploys capital across liquid strategies, so that the firm holds a balance between long-dated private positions and liquid, flexible exposure.

Why permanent capital matters

A conventional fund must return capital within a fixed term, which forces it to sell whether or not selling is right for the business. Permanent capital removes that constraint. Tao Capital can hold a company through a cycle, support a management team through a difficult year, or take a structure — a minority position, a convertible, a long-dated loan, full ownership — that a fund's mandate would not permit.

The same freedom applies to time. The firm can move quickly when a situation calls for it and wait when it does not. It has no obligation to deploy, and so it does not pay for the privilege of deploying.

How we work

The firm concentrates on a small number of sectors in which its principals have operated as well as invested. It prefers businesses with durable economics, honest accounting and management that thinks like an owner. It takes positions large enough to be a real partner and stays involved after the investment is made, through governance, capital and its network across Hong Kong, Mainland China and international markets.

Tao Capital does not publicise its holdings or its partners, and does not comment on individual investments.

Governance

Tao Capital Management Limited is a Hong Kong company. Its capital is proprietary: the firm has no external investors, no fund vehicles open to third parties and no obligation to any limited partner. Investment decisions are taken by the firm's principals, with the advice of external counsel, auditors and specialist advisers as each transaction requires.

The firm holds itself to the standards its counterparties expect. Corporate information, ownership and source-of-funds documentation are made available to banks, regulators and transaction counterparties under appropriate confidentiality, and the firm engages constructively with know-your-customer and due-diligence processes wherever it invests.

Because the firm does not manage money for others, it is not a licensed asset manager and does not hold itself out as one. It does not provide investment advice, and nothing on this site is an invitation to invest.
